Located in one of the most vibrant neighborhoods of Rio de Janeiro, Casa Rio is an international residency space for artists, producers and researchers from all areas of the arts and cultural production. Whether you are poet or a portrait painter, a choreographer or a DJ, whether you want to study carnival or immerse yourself in its making, we can offer a space and support during your stay. Casa Rio has its own small performance and workshop space, a gallery for exhibitions and a wide network of artists eager to exchange and share ideas and practices. Casa Rio is an iniative of People's Palace Projects, set up and run on behalf of the State Secretary of Culture of Rio de Janeiro. To find out more about the work we do in Brazil and the artists who have stayed here over the last three years please visiit: www.casario.rj.gov.br

About People's Palace Projects do Brasil: PPP do Brasil is a not-for-profit arts organisation based in Rio de Janeiro that advances the practice and understanding of art for social justice. It creates participatory arts projects, performances, educational initiatives and debates. We bring artists, activists, academics and audiences together for projects that address a wide range of social justice and human rights issues. For more information: www.peoplespalaceprojects.org.uk

Call: Casa Rio is open to proposals from international artists, cultural producers or researchers with a creative project that responds to and engages with Rio de Janeiro as it prepares for Carnival in 2019. In addition to a study bedroom for the period of the residency, we support for the development of partnerships based on a network of connections built up in the city over the last 28 years, as well as a dedicated space for workshops/performance/installations/exhibitions at Casa Rio itself. We provide a unique opportunity for artists get to know Rio de Janeiro as it dresses itself up for the multi-layered performance of carnival: from street blocos to Samba Schools, from Bate Bola to urban funk. But is also an opportunity to explore the contradictions of the city. None of us knows what 2019 holds for Brazil as it enters an ever more uncertain future, but we know that we want to make it possible for artists to be here with us to be part of whatever is to come.

The house can host up to four artist residencies at once. They can last from two weeks to three months. For more information: www.casario.rj.gov.br
