New Views – August 16- 22, 2015

We are very pleased to announce the launch of The International Summer School at the Bauhaus Trade Union School Landmark in Bernau bei Berlin.

The historical setting is a preeminent expression of functionalist Bauhaus architecture and was designed by Hannes Meyer and Hans Wittwer and completed in 1930. Drawing on the Bauhaus and its groundbreaking approaches to teaching art, design, and architecture, this new initiative for art education is presented by the Berlin Chamber of Crafts (Handwerkskammer Berlin) and made possible through the generous support of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Trade Union School Landmark Bernau (Stiftung Baudenkmal Bundesschule Bernau).

The International Summer School brings together the arts and humanities through a diverse range of tailor-made courses taught by a handpicked selection of renowned artistic and cultural producers from around the world.

The first edition will be held from August 16-22, 2015 and takes up the Bauhaus spirit. Set within an idyllic Brandenburg forest, the Bauhaus Denkmal Bundeschule provides the architectural stage for this edition and its theme: New Views. Together teachers and participants will examine and explore how to understand the conceptual legacy of the Bauhaus today and how can we stimulate cooperation, creativity, and awareness between people.

The unique design of the Meyer & Wittwer building offers participants, teachers, and the public a place for reflection, inspiration, professional exchange and simply for relaxing the mind. Located close enough to Berlin to benefit from its rich art and cultural life, but also far enough away not to be distracted by its twenty-four hour schedule, students are inspired by a rich historical background: an ideal context for professional innovation during a weeklong course of one's choosing.

The objective of the school is to offer a variety of courses on artistic thinking, making, seeing, and hearing for anyone interested in learning how to use creativity in daily professional life and work.

For the first edition we welcome our teachers Helen Cho (1971, Toronto, CA / Young Wall, KR), Renske Janssen (1975, Amsterdam, NL), Christopher Roth (1962, Berlin, DE), Carl Stone (1953, Los Angeles, US / Tokyo, JP), and Clemens Tissi (1963, Berlin, DE). For detailed information on the location, selected teachers, the scope of the courses, and to sign up please go to our new website at www.summerschool-bernau.de. And last but not least, registration is possible through June 30, 2015.

We are looking forward to welcoming you this summer!

Yours,
Renske Janssen, Curatorial Advisor
Holger Friese, Artistic Director
Gregor Schöning, Head of BIZWA / Berlin Chamber of Crafts
