LX92_II #1

Loredana Sperini
Mi ritorna in mente

Exhibition through 8 March 2014

KUNSTHALLE São Paulo invites Swiss artist Loredana Sperini (*1970, in Wattwil, Switzerland) to present Mi ritorna in mente, her first solo show in Brazil.

The artist's work is focused on the fragility and vulnerability of the body, which is explored through the combination of both materials, whose qualities are of very different nature, as in its forms, that range from geometric figures, abstractions, and human body elements. This formal and material combination creates a strong tension and estrangement in the observer, who, on the other hand, is also attracted by the colors and textures and sensuality of forms present in it.

In this sense, Sperini's work has an uncanny aspect – a term which, according to Freud denominates something that, being both familiar and strange, generates in the subject a cognitive dissonance, who feels attracted and at the same time rejects the observed object – that triggers memories and recollections in our subconscious, and lead us to a deeper world.

In Mi ritorna in mente the artist presents groups of works in different of materials. Five small porcelain sculptures are collages made from fragments of figures found in rubble of bombings of World War II, and purchased by the artist at the flea market in Berlin. Five other wall sculptures are collages of found objects in her studio, and molded in black epoxy. Some have only geometric shapes and include also other figurative elements.

There are also two abstract paintings in wax, and an assemblage of colorful sculptures of hands also made in wax and butterfly wings, arranged on top of a mirror. And last but not least, one work in cement exclusively made for the exhibition.

Loredana Sperini's show continues the LX92 project, which reaches its second year, and is support by the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia.

About LX92

Launched in 2013, the project LX92 consists of a series of exhibitions of foreign artists at KUNSTHALLE São Paulo, and aims to create an international dialogue between São Paulo and Europe, specially Switzerland, expanding the local art scene for the ideas that are being discussed in those countries and promoting European artists. In exchange, artists who have their shows at KUNSTHALLE São Paulo can experience the contact with the Brazilian culture while installing their works, which most of the times are developed for the space exclusively. The project title is a reference to the direct flight that connects Zurich to Sao Paulo.
