FAAP 44th Anual de Arte (Annual of Arts), in Ribeirão Preto

The 44th Anual de Arte, FAAP students traditional visual arts exhibit and considered a reference in contemporary production, after having been presented at the Museum of Brazilian Arts (MAB-FAAP), in São Paulo, and in FAAP campus in São José dos Campos, will be inaugurated, next May 6, at the Foundation's headquarters in the city of Ribeirão Preto.

The Anual de Arte garners, at FAAP Ribeirão Preto, a set of 15 works produced by 14 students with different stands, techniques and means. The exhibit is a fragment of the 44th Anual de Arte that gathered 37 works in São Paulo.

Created and organized by FAAP on an annual basis since 1964, the exhibit is perceived as a most traditional and long standing one among the contemporary art exhibits in the city of São Paulo, however of national projection and range.

In its 44th edition, the exhibit can be presented as an activity that privileges innovation and the creative potential, integrating the Foundation's institutional project that, in a manner coherent with its objectives and ideals, acts by encouraging and supporting artistic and cultural production. The works were originally selected by a commission comprised of professionals acting within the different areas of production and artistic practice, such as artists, researchers, critics, curators, historians and lecturers at FAAP School of Plastic Arts.

Guest Artists

In parallel to the Anual de Arte, also gathered are works of guest artists Henrique César and Thiago Honório, both from the Artistic Residence Program provided by FAAP at Cité des Arts, in Paris. The audience will have the opportunity to become acquainted with the artists' research and creation processes, through a selection of references and materials that resulted in works produced during the period they spent at the Residence.

Maintained by FAAP since 1997, in Cité des Arts, the Program is the outcome of an agreement entered between both foundations; existing for sixteen years, it continues to offer the conditions for a privileged space for creation, work and temporary residence for artists that seek differentiated time and space conditions for their creation.

Honório's first project aimed to create a black serial publication based on Erotism, the work by French author Georges Bataille, but as he arrived in Paris, he became enchanted by the fripperies and antiquity fairs that traded, among many articles, cutting and piercing objects. The work moved on to become involved with those tools and with the process of understanding of what the work of art actually is. The outcome is the drawings that gently build up this relation between Bataille's erotic universe and the immersion in the Cité des Arts. In his daily visits to the Parisian fairs, the artist acquired more than 200 different kinds of knives and pliers.

Henrique César first projected to know the catacombs, tunnels and underground spaces of the city of lights. The challenge was to offend the authorities, which led the artist to bring to the surface his interventions, focusing on observation of the public's relation with objects out of the context they are used to. His work consists of images of the catacomb he visited – and filmed with the help of a micro-camera – and drawings of antennas that helped him in the creation.

Lecture The experience of FAAP Artistic Residence in the Cité des Arts, in Paris, by Thiago Honório

At the opening of the exhibit, Thiago Honório, the guest artist and professor at FAAP, will present a report, followed by images, on his research, work and life experience, including, among others, exhibition and participation in Open Studio and Studio Visit during the six months he spent at the '1422', the atelier FAAP maintains in the heart of Marais, in Paris, near the Cité des Arts, to which every semester a student, teacher of former student is selected, aiming to develop artistic projects.

The lecture will be mediated by the exhibit curator Marcos Moraes, coordinator of FAAP Visual Arts course and of its Artistic Residence Program.
