Sibelius Academy Helsinki: Call for Applications—Degrees in Music Technology

The Centre for Music & Technology of the Sibelius Academy is accepting applications for studies towards the degrees of Bachelor of Music and Master of Music, beginning September 2013.

We are looking for strongly motivated students having a musical background and an interest in one or more of the artistic and research approaches to sound and music covered by our department, including music recording & production, electroacoustic music composition/performance and media and sonic arts.

The Centre for Music & Technology, unique in Finland and part of one of Europe's top music schools, is a leader in teaching, artistic production and research in a broad range of music technology disciplines. With its international staff of specialist teachers, it offers a stimulating yet intimate study environment in the context of a school with superb opportunities for high-level musicianship, performance, production and artistic collaboration. At Bachelors level, students are given two years of broad training in music technology and general musicianship, followed by a third year with advanced topics and a bachelors project. Masters level studies lead to opportunities for specialization, culminating in a thesis or large project. Students' personal study ambitions are well catered for through integrated secondary study paths in sound art, film music, digital signal processing, digital musicianship, live sound, sound diffusion and improvisation. Typically, students take advantage of the extensive flexible study rights with closely connected partner schools in the city (Theatre Academy, Academy of Fine Arts, MediaLab and Sound in New Media programmes of Aalto University), to add depth, artistic insight and vocational dimensions to their basic study. The Centre is housed in the brand new Helsinki Music Centre at the heart of Helsinki's vibrant cultural scene. Home to two professional orchestras, the building has state-of-the-art studio and concert facilities, a main auditorium, Black Box, chamber, opera and organ halls and a daily programme of events.

Students accepted into the combined Bachelor/Masters program are aically transferred to the Masters program on completion of their Bachelors studies without the need to reapply. Students with an appropriate Bachelors degree (or equivalent) may apply directly to the 2.5 year Masters program.
