How to approach fictional and non-fictional stories? Three of 21 courses of 2013 Summer Academy deal with this topic in different ways.

PAOLO WOODS is convinced that photography has its own language. This means that to take photographs one has to learn and master this language. Its vocabulary and grammar, obviously, and its history, inevitably. But more than ever today, any photographic work becomes interesting and necessary if the images are charged with a narrative. So we need to learn to tell stories: syntax, introduction, narrative and conclusion. The aim of this course is to learn how to translate into the language of photography all that we have within and before us.
Duration: 22 July–3 August 2013
Fee: € 660.- (red. € 500.-)

How can we understand the world? In SARNATH BANERJEE's course the students will explore the various manifestations and implications of a new hybrid language arising from the simultaneous use of image and text. This language can be used not only to narrate, but to examine, argue and discuss historical events, human relationships, current global political conflicts, physical processes, etc. It can help to clarify the complexity of modern life. The aim of this course is to lead participants towards an exceptional form of artistic expression that will help them to find new approaches to their work.
Duration: 12–31 August 2013
Fee: € 890.- (red. € 650.-)

OLGA CHERNYSHEVA's course will deal with the 'Artist's territory'. In the current art scene, a work of art cannot be apprehended at first glance, since every work is an integral part of an 'artistic landscape'. This may be entirely fictional, or it may contain details taken from reality. As a starting-point, the participants might take sketches made in the town, or perhaps visual comments on some spaceoriented text. Media may be drawing, painting, sculpture, video, photography, or even poetry or readymades. In any case, intuition will drive them towards their subject, with empathy as their guiding principle and primary resource.
Duration: 12 – 31 August 2013
Fee: € 890.- (red. € 650.-)
