On Sunday Sept. 9, 2012, the extended Museum Kurhaus Kleve – Ewald Mataré-collection will be re-opened. For the first time it will be possible not only to experience a completely new museum wing with the original studio space of Joseph Beuys, but also the entire collection of the Museum Kurhaus Kleve with masterpieces form the middle-ages to the present day.

The Museum Kurhaus Kleve was opened in April 1997. Since then it has become one of the leading museums for modern and temporary art in the German region of North-Rhine Westphalia. It has been awarded to major prizes by the German section of AICA: 'Museum of the Year' in 2004 and 'Outstanding Exhibition: Carl Andre' in 2011. The museum is located in what was formerly the spa building of the city of Kleve, erected in the 19th century.

Joseph Beuys (1921-1986) was raised in Kleve. After his studies with Ewald Mataré at the Düsseldorf Academy and his nervous breakdown, he retreated to his hometown where he recovered and turned into the revolutionary artist we know today. In this process of transformation the studio in Kleve which now forms part of the Museum Kurhaus Kleve played a decisive role.
