The 17th Artecinema, International Festival of Documentaries Films on Contemporary Art, will take place in Naples on October 4-5-6-7.
A selection of 23 documentaries about the leading artists, architects and photographers of the last fifty years from the world over will be presented in the categories of Art and Environs, Architecture and Photography.
Encounters and open debates will be held with the directors, artists and producers.

In 1993, the German artist Anselm Kiefer left Germany and moved to an abandoned silk factory in the South of France where he set up a studio and built an evocative serpentine labyrinth of underground tunnels.

AI WEIWEI: WITHOUT FEAR OR FAVOUR *
Matthew Springford, Gran Bretagna, 2010, 55'
Ai Weiwei is one of China's most influential contemporary artists and is known for his political activism in favour of human rights and freedom of expression. Arrested by the Chinese government, Weiwei was detainde at a secret location and only released conditionally after eighty days.

Alexander Nanau, Romania, 2010, 60'
The touching story of Ion Barladeanu, a 62 year old Romanian homeless man whose work of morvellous collages is accidentally discovered by a gallery owner. Barladeunu becomes involved in the art world and his life is trasformed.

DILLER SCOFIDIO + RENFRO: REIMAGINING LINCOLN CENTER AND THE HIGH LINE*
Muffie Dunn, Tom Piper, Stati Uniti, 2012, 54'
Two projects completed by the Diller Scofidio + Renfro Studio in New York: the conversion of the old High Line railroad tracks on the city's West Side into a large elevated urban park and the transformation of Lincoln Center and the entire surrounding area.

Anne Maregiano, Francia, 2011, 70'
In a intimate confession, accompanied by archival photos and previously unpublished videos and music, the artist of sound, Charlemagne Palestine, involves us in his quest.

François Lévy-Kuentz, Francia, 2010, 52'
Half documentary and half fiction, this film traces the life of Piet Mondrian, from his early realist works to the years of the De Stijl movement and his subsequent departure for New York. The set where the film was shot was an exact replica of his Paris studio.

Gilles Coudert, Francia, 2011, 16'
This film illustrates the planning and mounting of the Echos, travaux in situ exhibit created in 2011 by Daniel Buren at the Centre Pompidou-Metz, in the area designed by the architects Shigeru Ban and Jean de Gastines.

Remmelt Lukkien, Paesi Bassi, 2011, 44'
The Dutch artist Marjan Teeuwen creates her works with debris from abandoned buildings slated for demolition. The photographs of her accumulations become autonomous work of art.

This documentary reveals how the creative experiences of child play have influenced some of Britain's leading artists, including Tracey Emin, Grayson Perry, Marc Quinn, Gavin Turk, Mat Collishaw and David Bailey.

For some nine years, the camera followed developments in the construction of the new Liège Station in Belgium, Gare des Guillemins, designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, and the urban transformation of the entire surrounding area.

OPALKA - ONE LIFE, ONE OEUVRE *
Andrzej Sapija,, Polonia, 2011, 54'
A portrait of Roman Opalka, the well known Polish artist who worked for more than forty years on one pictorial project. In 1965, Opalka painted the number 1 on a canvas and continued with this numeric series until his death. All were the same size, one after another in ascending numeric sequence.

Jill Nicholls, Gran Bretagna, 2011, 60'
This film tells the touching stories of six Iraqi artists scattered around the world and follows them as they prepare their works for the Venice Biennale. Their participation at the Biennale represents an epochmaking event in the hisory of a war torn country.

Antonella Licata, Olanda, 2011, 27'
It is Grrr Jamming Squeak is a public artwork Paola Pivi who, in 2010, set up a free recording studio for one year where visiors could record their music with the proviso that one of the more than 100 available animal cries be used in their recordings.

Korean artist Kimsooja tells of her artistic development, from her first installations made with the typical coloured fabric of her homeland to her videos and her most recent projects dedicated to dhe theme of immigration.

Giancarlo Neri, Francesca Borrelli, Brasile, 2011, 6'
By day, the nine thousand small lights installed by artist Giancarlo Neri in Praça Paris of Rio de Janeiro look like countless golf balls placed on the lawn, by night, nistead, the grass disappears, the darkness absorbs the panorama and the installation finally reveals itself.

Chris King, Gran Bretagna, 2012, 38'
As he shows us previously unpublished documents and images from his own personal archives, Damien Hirst speaks openly of his life: from his infancy in Leeds, his move to London, the years he spent at Goldsmiths College, until his rise to fame.

ANDREAS GURSKY. LONG SHOT CLOSE UP
Jan Schmidt-Garre, Germania, 2009, 60'
The film follows Andreas Gursky's 2008 photographic project Hamm, Bergwerk Ost taken in the lockerrooms of a German mine. The narration is accompanied by the comments of artist Hilla Becher, the critic Werner Spies and Russian collector Victor Pinchuk.

Corinna Belz, Germania, 2011, 97'
Between the spring and summer of 2009, Gerhard Richter allowed director Corinna Belz to film him in his studio as he worked on a series of large canvases. We see the artist as he contemplates, rejects, re-elaborates and occasionally destroys his paintings only to begin, once again, from the start.

PICASSO AT WORK THROUGH THE LENS OF DAVID DOUGLAS DUNCAN *
Thierry Spitzer, Francia, 2011, 20'
In 1956, following the suggestion of Robert Capa, war photographer David Douglas Duncan, met with Pablo Picasso in Cannes. The immediate sense of complicity in their relationship was such that the artist allowed Duncan to photograph him in the various moments of his life.

Bert Stern became one of the most sought after photographers thanks to his captivating publicity campaigns, the images of Lolita in Kubrick's film, the shots of Marilyn Monroe and the world of cinema's most famous stars.

Susan Sollins, Stati Uniti, 2012, 47'
These episodes from the Art:21 series focuses on three very different artistic personalities: the Serbian Marina Abramović, the Nigerian El Anatsui and the Japanese Tabaimo.

JOHN PORTMAN: A LIFE OF BUILDING
Ben Loeterman, Stati Uniti, Cina, 2011, 52'
American architect John Portman is best known for his designs of shopping malls and luxurious hotels with large atriums.

* The director will be in attendance
