ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN STUDIO MEDIA ARTS

The Department of Visual Arts of the University of Ottawa announces the opening of a full-time, tenure-track position in Studio Media Arts at the rank of Assistant Professor.

The Department offers a Master of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Arts with Major in Visual Arts, programs that are committed to both studio practice and theory, as well as a Major in History and Theory of Art.

The candidate should be actively engaged in a media art practice and demonstrate a clear understanding of the significant role of media art within the field of contemporary visual art. Successful candidates will have a background in interactivity as well as the moving image. They will have a knowledge of relevant technology and software including an understanding of analogue as well as digital technology. Additional background in sound, sculpture, computer programming, performance or emerging/hybrid forms is an asset.

Teaching ability is required at all levels of the undergraduate and graduate programs with a commitment to creating a critical and experimental teaching environment.

Qualifications

• M.F.A. or equivalent
• Extensive commitment to media art practice and an active and recognized practice with an exhibition record beyond the local and regional level
• Strong knowledge of contemporary art issues and theory and fluency with media art practice
• Ability to engage in curriculum development, administrative tasks and cross - disciplinary development
• Ability to teach in a bilingual setting (French-English) at the time of hiring
• Teaching experience at the post-secondary level

The salary is determined according to the Collective Agreement of the University of Ottawa. Please note that interviews are likely to take place in March.

Start date : July 1, 2011

Three confidential letters of recommendation should also be sent directly to the Chair of the Department:
