REVOLUTION PER MINUTE (2009)

Tommi Grönlund and Petteri Nisunen participate in the Moscow biennale which opens on Friday the 25th of September. The duo was invited by curator Anna Bitkina. The Biennial is arranged for the third time and features work by artists from 25 countries. It is open to the public until 25th of October.

'Revolution Per Minute' is a new work by Finnish artists Tommi Grönlund and Petteri Nisunen that was elaborated especially for a former shop floor of the factory Red October. In this installation, the artists work with the synthesis of the structure, geometrical forms and history of the chosen space that is used as an art venue for the first time and still preserves the spirit of the Soviet factory.

The long white rods rotate with the speed of 1 revolution per minute by means of an attached engine. This slow motion fills up the space and creates a somewhat meditative effect thus reminding the viewers of monotonous work of the factory machines and estranged and mechanical labor of the people operating them. The work title 'Revolution Per Minute' refers to pathos and rhetoric of Soviet slogans and word combinations like, for example, Red October, which combines color depth and revolutionary call. The minimalistic project of the two Finnish artists is almost devoid of color and dynamics, which fully contrasts
with the space it is set into. This creates complementary historical and aesthetical levels of perception of both the installation and the space.

The exhibition is supported by FRAME - Finnish Fund for Art Exchange
