Zhao Liang media class: a few places are still free

Zhao Liang will be holding a media class at the Salzburg International Summer Academy of Fine Arts from 10 to 29 August 2009. A few places are still free; the closing date for applications is 30 June.

The documentarist and video artist recently attracted much attention at the Film Festival in Cannes with 'Petition', which was shown at the Special Screenings. He was also one of the artists most talked about at the 2008 Berlin Biennial and the 2007 Rencontres d´Arles.

Zhao Liang's aesthetic combines the method of the documentary with the language of popular culture, following the strict logic of the classic documentary while adopting elements of video games, B movies and music videos.

Course programme

The course programme will involve an intense engagement with the history and present condition of film, while dedicating itself to students' individual projects – or group projects if desired. The reflection and discussion of people’s individual views, experiences and approaches will play an important role, but also the development and elaboration of an artistic/filmic work. Group discussions, collective film analysis and individual talks on specific projects will complement one another.

The following subjects are offered by Zhao Liang:
1. Film’s present day-day social artistic status
2. The significance of film in everyday life
3. Personal attitude and its expression
4. Video art and indipendent film in China
5. Zhao Liang’s artistic practice

Students are expected to bring materials they prefer to work with as well as sketchbooks, laptops, and cameras. Video editing computers will be available.

Enrolment and tuition fees total € 810.- (reduced fee of € 585.- for students at Academies of Art and Media).
