SIXTY YEARS. SIXTY WORKS. Art from the Federal Republic of Germany

This year the Federal Republic of Germany is commemorating the sixtieth anniversary of the ratification of its constitution. In honor of this jubilee, the Martin-Gropius-Bau Berlin will present the exhibition 'SIXTY YEARS. SIXTY WORKS. Art from the Federal Republic of Germany' from May 1 to June 14. On view will be 60 works of art including paintings, sculpture, photography and installations created by the most influential German artists since 1949.

The exhibition recounts the history of the Federal Republic of Germany through the aesthetic phenomena of the visual arts and takes as its theme the guarantee of freedom of expression in paragraph 5, article 3 of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Germany. As orientation for visitors, a time line featuring sixty monitors will recall actual political and social events that significantly impacted on each of the six decades. Interactive terminals will also provide information on the relevant artistic events of the last sixty years.

Professor Bazon Brock will conduct his 'action teaching' seminars daily throughout the exhibition. Originally developed for documenta 4 in 1968, these seminars and in-depth guided tours aim to cultivate an appreciation of art in a broad range of visitors.

A catalogue will be published featuring reproductions of all the exhibited works as well as essays by well-known authors situating the exhibition in its proper historical context.

The exhibition is an initiative of The Foundation for Art and Culture Bonn (Stiftung für Kunst und Kultur e.V. Bonn) and BILD, Germany's largest daily paper. Major funding has been provided by the gas and electric utility company RWE. The exhibition is supported by the Ministry of the Interior of the Federal Republic of Germany.
