Residential Scholarships at the Kuenstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral, Bad Ems, Germany

May 26th 2008 is the starting date of the application period for Balmoral scholarships in Bad Ems. Seven residential scholarships will be awarded, six of those to visual artists.

In order to promote the dialogue between research and art, one of the scholarships will be awarded to a junior scholar of the humanities (preferably in the field of Art History) to develop his curatorial skills.

Additionally, Balmoral will award a project grant to allow a selected visual artist to realize a project elsewhere. This will eventually be presented at Kuenstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral.

The scholarships and the project grant run for six months each, starting in April 2009. The scholarships are endowed with 1.200 Euros per month and include free accommodation at the Kuenstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral.

Requirements for entitlement:
Candidates for a Balmoral Scholarship may include artists from the fields of painting, sculpture, installation, drawing, graphic art, design, photography, video, as well as new media, landscape art or nature art.

Applicants will be required to possess a degree in art and to have continuously worked as artists for at least three years until the beginning of the fellowship. Artists of all ages and nationalities are invited to submit their application. In order to enable artistic dialogue and interdisciplinary collaboration, candidates are ideally required to speak German, English or French.

The scholarship for curators will be awarded to a junior scholar of the humanities (preferably in the field of Art History). S/He will be working in agreement and close cooperation with the Kuenstlerhaus and the artists holding a scholarship to realize an exhibition project. S/He will be endowed with all tasks referring to curatorial work, including the research of a possible exhibition space outside of Balmoral. S/He will play an active part in the organization and the activities of the institution.

Requirements:
S/He must be no older than 35 years of age have graduated (preferably PHD) within the last five years. S/He must imperatively be fluent in German language and have good knowledge of English, possibly of French.

This scholarship is awarded like the residential scholarships for artists.
Attractive foreign scholarships for artists from Rhineland-Palatinate

In order to enable artists from Rhineland-Palatinate to make experience in foreign countries, Balmoral tops the offer of the Land with two very attractive scholarships:

* One six/months scholarship at Chelsea University in London from January 1st to June 30th and
* One six/months scholarship at Location One in New York from September 1st to February 28th.

Since 2005, Balmoral is in charge of the scholarships awarded by the Land Rhineland-Palatinate. These are:

* Two six-month scholarships for the Cité internationale, Paris from January 1st to June 30th and from July 1st to December 31st. Please indicate your preference
* One five-month scholarship at Wiepersdorf, starting in February 2009
* One three-month scholarship for the Centre d'art contemporain de Saint-Léger, Pougues-les-Eaux, Burgundy (time is to negociate)

All scholarships are endowed with 1.200 Euros per month and include free accommodation. In some cases some fees are taken in charge and augment the scholarship.

Considered as Rhineland-Palatinatian is who is born or as studied here as well as who is or has been living in Rhineland-Palatinate for at least one year.

Candidates for these scholarships may have to fulfill further requirements in addition to those mentioned above.

Allocation of Scholarships:
Scholarships are allocated by a selection committee of experts who will pay particular attention to the development potential of the applicant's artistic / theoretical work. Once the scholarships have been awarded, the members of the selection committee will made public in the press.
