Sophie Bueno-Boutellier at Cardenas-Bellanger

Cardenas Bellanger is pleased to announce the first solo exhibition of Berlin-based Sophie Bueno Boutellier.

The sculptures and installations of Sophie Bueno-Boutellier are heavily influenced by theosophy, the writings of Mircea Eliade, and romanticism; as well as by rationalism and scientific methods. Her work is an interrogation around manifestations of the metaphysical, confronted by the hard realities of empirical evidence. Preferring to embrace subjective narratives than to cold detachment, she underscores her penchant for dealing with issues related to sincerity and strategy head-on.

The architecture of these installations takes form through an intuitive, process-oriented relation to symbolically loaded materials. This process affords the viewer the possibility to forgo formal details in favor of a broader understanding of the whole; leaving the viewer possibilities for engagement without needing the condition of knowing exactly what is going on. Despite this language of signs and symbols, each piece leaves the viewer with a sense of doubt, where myriad possibilities for meaning lie delicately balanced between reason and intuition.

Sophie Bueno-Boutellier studied at the Villa Arson in Nice, and currently lives and works in Berlin. Her work has been included in several exhibitions including: 'Visions Nocturnes' at the galerie de Noisy le Sec, 'le Voyage Interieur' at the espace Edf Electra, 'All we ever wanted was Everything' at the Centre d'art contemporain de la Synagogue de Delme, 'Mayday' currently on view at Rental Gallery, New York, 'Unsere Affekte fliegen aus dem Bereich der menschlichen Wirklichkeit heraus' at Galerie Sandra Bürgel in Berlin, 'Faces' at Showroom Berlin, and 'Niveau alarm' at kunstraum Innsbrucke.
