"My approach is very much through association. One thing leads to the next. I have become more and more attached to this method, which is basically a chain of thought, of thinking. Which leads me to the question whether you can think through art. I think you can. So perhaps that is the answer to the question, that my work is a way of thinking through art, and that every action that goes into it becomes part of one and the same process." (Joachim Koester)

Each year, Open Studios provides a privileged and interesting insight into the space in which art can come into being, both physically and conceptually.  Open Studios gives the candidate-laureates an opportunity to undergo a confrontation with the public and generate feedback from professionals in the visual arts. It also offers the audience access and insight into the process of artistic development from a young generation of artists who will contribute to shaping the artistic landscape for years to come.

During 2008, there are candidate-laureates from: Canada, Japan, South Africa, Belarus, Israel, Turkey, Poland, Switzerland, France, Germany, The Netherlands and Belgium. These were selected by an international jury from hundreds of applicants.

The Higher Institute of Fine Arts (HISK) organizes the postgraduate education in Flanders in the field of the visual arts. It provides some twenty-five young artists from Belgium and abroad with a studio of their own, for a duration of two years and specific, tailor-made guidance.

At the HISK the emphasis lies mainly on individual practice, with an international focus. The visiting lecturers are crucial. Artists, curators, critics and theoreticians pay individual studio visits at regular intervals. There are also frequent visits to significant art events, and readings, master classes, seminars and workshops are organized. The HISK also offers extensive technical facilities and production possibilities. Thanks to the unique HISK concept the participants are given every opportunity to seriously invest in the critical research of their work, and to situate it within a broader artistic, cultural and societal context.

At the end of the two-year working period, the participant receives the certificate of Laureate of the HISK’. The HISK is officially recognized as Higher Institute and is financed by the Flemish Community – Ministry of Education and supported by the City of Ghent.

Since 1997, 136 laureates have graduated from the HISK. The largest part of them are currently building up a successful professional career in the Belgian and international art world.
