Corpus Delicti

Contemporary art in the Brussels Law Courts

Exhibition curated by: Florent Bex, honorary director of the MUHKA, Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerpen. E-mail: flor.bex@co-de.org

Corpus Delicti is a moment of recognition which we, as curating practitioners of the contemporary arts, would like to present to the practitioners of Justice, too little known/too often misunderstood by the public.

Corpus Delicti is not a classical exhibition in the neutral space of a museum or art center. By placing specific works of art optimally in existing spaces, we hope to create an interaction with the building as well as a dialogue between the works of art themselves. The result is an enchanted palace, a place of discovery and surprise that stimulates the creative imaginations of both users and visitors alike. The works have been selected for their quality, but more particularly for their accessibility to a broad public and focusing human condition.

The aim of Corpus Delicti is to provide a platform for contemporary art in a special environment for the benefit of the general public and in particular for the many people who use the building.

We have selected about 70 works which are not only recognisable and focus mainly on the human body, but also evoke sufficient associations, generate a range of meanings and form an integral part of the special context of the spaces in the 19th. century Law Courts of Brussels.

As the walls of the building are not really suitable for hanging works, we exhibit three-dimensional works as well as special installations and video works.

Participating artists are: Philip Aguirre y Otegui, Pascal Bernier, Guillaume Bijl, Jacques Charlier, Michel Clerbois, Leo Copers, Patrick Corillon, Michel Couturier, Ronald Dagonnier, Berlinde De Bruyckere, Thierry De Cordier, Edith Dekyndt, Marie Delier, Messieurs Delmotte, Wim Delvoye, Denmark, Paul De Vylder, Jan Fabre, Michel François, Maurice Frydman, Michel Huisman, Djos Janssens, Sven 't Jolle, Marin Kasimir, Jacques Lennep, Jacques Lizène, Emilio Lopez-Menchero, Chantal Maes, Sofie Muller, Johan Muyle, Annick Nölle, Jean-François Octave, Panamarenko, Leo Reynders, Peter Rogiers, Sylvie Ronflette & Bruno Cossalter, Bärbel Schulte Kellinghaus, Alain Séchas, Koen Theys, Jan Van Oost, Lieve Van Stappen, Angel Vergara Santiago, Henk Visch, Loreta Visic.
