Kunstlerhaus Stuttgart: Cornelius Cardew and the freedom of listening

The exhibition and program series 'Cornelius Cardew and the freedom of listening' at Künstlerhaus Stuttgart presents the work of British composer Cornelius Cardew, and reflects his work through an installation of photographs, scores, correspondences, posters, paraphrenalia, and recordings, as well as a live program of performances. Cornelius Cardew was amongst the most influential composers of the second half of the 20th century; he worked with Karlheinz Stockhausen and John Cage, expanded the boundaries of avantgarde music and was a pioneer in improvisation before his tragic death in 1981 at the age of 45. The project, realized in collaboration with the CAC Bretigny, concentrates above all on participative interests of Cardew, like incorporating amateur musicians and experimental forms of notation, to question traditional hierarchic structures. The exhibition and program series presents the work of Cornelius Cardew and the Scratch Orchestra within a framework of art and music and is the first major retrospective of the artist in Germany.

Events

An integral part of the project is a series of concerts and performances relating to the work of Cornelius Cardew, offering an opportunity to examine his work beyond the exhibition format. Concerts include intrepretations by former colleagues Keith Rowe and Michael Parsons, French composer Jean-Jacques Palix, electronic music artist Ekkehard Ehlers, as well as the orchestra of the Staatsoper Stuttgart. Another event will be a dance interpretation of a Cardew composition by French choreographers Annie Vigier and Franck Apertet. The series culminates with a concert by Horace and Walter Cardew, who will play a selection of their father's music.
