Stefano Cagol is the current artist in residence at BAR International in Kirkenes, Norway.

Kirkenes, just a few miles from the borders to Russia and Finland, has become a transborder town, a gateway to Russia, a crossroad for political decisions and a laboratory for creative solutions to economic, cultural and social challenges in the Barents region.

Curators' collective Pikene på Broen who run BAR International asked Italian artist Stefano Cagol to reflect on current issues related to the Barents borderland in transition and in general to the High North during a residency period from November 14 to December 5, 2010. So Cagol is realizing video works and is developing short term, but also long term installations under the title 'EVOKE PROVOKE (the border)'. The works realized by Stefano Cagol as result of this research and produced within BAR International will be presented in the exhibition 'Mind the Map' inside the frame of the annual winter festival Barents Spektakel 2011, that will take place in Kirkenes from February 2 to 6, 2011, showing the works / interventions also by Morten Traavik NO, Olga Kisseleva RU/FR, SpringerParker DE, and others. Visit www.barentsspektakel.no

On next year Stefano Cagol will hold also a solo project at San Gallo Church in Venice (May 31 – November 27, 2011), a solo show by Priska C. Juschka Fine Art in New York (opening in February) and a solo show at Oredaria Arti Contemporanee in Rome (opening in May).

BAR International artist-in-residency program invites artists from the Barents Region and outside. BAR facilitates art-production and mediation in the Barents Region: both studio-based work/research and artistic processes in public space. BAR International is connected to other projects curated and produced by Pikene på Broen: the annual winter festival Barents Spektakel and the Barents Art Triennale. These events become presentation arenas for works produced under art-residency. BAR International is supported by the Nordic Culture Point, Norwegian Arts Council, Barents Secretariat, Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Finnmark County and Sør-Varanger Municipality.
