Call for Films
Film as Idea, Film as Film, Film as Art

In 1971, Polish conceptual artist Ewa Partum launched an independent art gallery. Galeria Adres (1972-1977) based in Lódz/Poland, fostered transnational artistic exchange and promoted conceptual art and mail art. In 1977 the gallery organised the 1st International Film Festival 'Film as Idea, Film as Film, Film as Art'. The main purpose of the festival was to 'treat film as film' i.e. to explore materiality and structural specificity of 8mm film and to transgress the specific boundaries of the medium.

On the occasion of the first comprehensive exhibition of gallery's archives this Spring, we would like to revisit the idea of 'film as film' and to re-consider the possibility and the relevance of this medium in relation to the current geo-political constellation. In line with the original festival call, the submitted material should 'embrace artistic facts, documentation or the art of action.

Projects should relate to the general theme of 'Crossing Boundaries': Submissions could include propositions that analyse the medium of film itself or art projects that deal with contemporary's political and sociological issues such as living in border areas, critical cosmopolitanism, migration or post-diasporic non-belonging. We are interested in propositions that not merely represent the stories of migration but rather in projects that problematize the medium of film with the relation to the contemporary conditions of overcoming the borders.

Three films, selected by the curators, will be shown at the forthcoming exhibition along historical and contemporary works of Ewa Partum and projects submitted for International Film Festival in 1977. Up to five more submissions will be shown on single days during the exhibition. The exhibition will take place at the Galeria Studio (March-May 2019), located in Warsaw's iconic Cultural Palace building, a place with a long tradition of neo avant-garde exhibitions.

• Submissions are invited for single-channel film works from artists.
• All formats, especially digital formats are accepted.
• All non-English or non-Polish projects should have English or Polish subtitles.
• Length restrictions: films less than 60 minutes are accepted.
• The link to the theme 'crossing borders' must be clearly identifiable.
• Please do not send full files.
• Any online-version (link, website etc.) and/or a description of the project is accepted.
