The international 'Blickachsen' Sculpture Biennale celebrates its tenth anniversary in 2015

'Blickachsen 10' opens on 31 May 2015 in Bad Homburg, Germany

Contemporary sculpture in a historic setting – this has been the concept behind the open-air 'Blickachsen' exhibitions since 1997, during which time the Biennale has established itself as one of the most important showcases for contemporary sculpture in Europe. This year, for the tenth time, the route through Europe's largest sculpture exhibition in the public open space is set to attract lovers of modern art to Bad Homburg, Frankfurt and other prime locations throughout the Rhine-Main region, with its countless attractions, ranging from beautiful old towns and ancient castles to a variety of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Once again, in this tenth anniversary year, Bad Homburg's renowned Kurpark and landgraviate castle gardens will form the main setting for the 'Blickachsen 10' exhibition of large-scale sculptures and installations by some of the world's leading sculptors as well as emerging new talent from around the globe. This biennial event, which in 2013 attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors, opens striking new perspectives onto familiar locations. Here, the visitor strolling through the extensive park landscapes will be able to experience distinctive works of art as they relate to their surroundings, and react to the change of seasons.

The 'Blickachsen', the 'visual axes' or sight lines, created in the Kurpark in 1856 by the celebrated landscape architect Peter Joseph Lenné, form the programmatic starting point for the exhibition series.
As Christian K. Scheffel, founder and curator of 'Blickachsen' and director of the Blickachsen Foundation, explains: 'During the Biennale this principle is extended, so that the carefully placed sculptures open up new sight lines, promoting a creative dialogue not just with each other but also with their scenic and architectural surroundings.'

Every two years, Scheffel creates this ambitious project together with a different international partner museum, and with the support of the city of Bad Homburg, the Stately Homes & Gardens Administration in Hesse, as well as a large number of private and institutional supporters. What began just 20 years ago as a bold vision, has now developed into an internationally noted event for sculpture lovers everywhere, who come in the summer and autumn months every two years to see the new constellation of sculptures on display.

'Blickachsen 10' will be opened on 31 May 2015 in Bad Homburg, and will run until 4 October 2015.

The public benefit Blickachsen Foundation was established in March 2013 to provide an institutional home for the 'Blickachsen' Sculpture Biennale.
