The Academy of Fine Arts Nuremberg sees itself as a creative laboratory committed to open research; founded in 1662 it is the oldest in the German-speaking world. Emphasis is on the fine, and applied arts along with art teacher training. In the courses devoted to fine arts - sculpture, painting, photography, artistic concepts, gold & silversmithing, and graphic design/visual communication – students and professors work together in open dialogue. The academy endeavours to engage all contemporary art forms and approaches and to situate them in and amongst the most relevant social and historical-critical contexts.
Learning is based on fostering individual talent; students are free to develop their own concepts and to realise their artistic projects on their own initiative. Study is envisioned thus: acquiring individual skills while improving theoretical and practical proficiency. Creative discourse is stimulated via different artistic viewpoints and to this end experts from a wide range of disciplines visit regularly and provide insight into fields that may well extend beyond the realm of art. In addition to this, guest professorships further enrich the wide spectrum of artistic endeavour at the academy.
340 students are currently enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts Nuremberg. Studies take place in small groups of carefully selected students. The Academy values its low student to professor ratio, which creates a more personal, one-on-one approach to instruction.
