About the Valand Academy

Valand Academy of Arts at the University of Gothenburg welcomes applications to the position of Senior Lecturer in Fine Art. Valand Academy is a department with a multi-disciplinary environment and a unique breadth of subjects in the fine arts - Film, Fine Art, Photography and Literary Composition. We are approximately 90 employees and 300 students, studying in programmes at the bachelor's, master's and doctoral level.



Valand Academy is a dynamic platform for the artist/ author/ filmmaker/ photographer. We are especially focused on artistic interaction and artist-led cultures within contemporary art, film, literature and photography. Valand Academy is centrally situated in Gothenburg and closely integrated with the cultural life of the city, including collaborations with Göteborgs Konsthall, Hasselblad Center, Röda Sten, Gothenburg International Biennial for Contemporary Art (GIBCA), Gothenburg's House of Literature, Gothenburg's poetry festival and many other cultural initiatives.



Valand Academy has been conducting artistic research for more than a decade. We offer a vital research environment, including many nationally funded projects in the fields of artist-led culture, social practice, queer film, contemporary poetry and criticism, as well as photography's significance in environmental, ecological and climate research.



We have an extensive international network and partners all over the world: including EARN, SHARE, PARSE, SAR and a partnership with BARD CCS

Employees at Valand Academy have the opportunity to apply for funding for artistic research or educational development at the department's Research Board and Education Board, respectively.

1. Postdoctor in Photography, Photography and Human Rights

Valand Academy at the University of Gothenburg and the Hasselblad Foundation have a long-term partnership developing critical reflection on photography and its mediation. As part of this partnership, the Hasselblad Foundation is launching a research project on photography and human rights in Autumn 2016, and photo-based artists holding a PhD can apply to a two-year Post-Doctoral position at Valand Academy starting September 2016. The number of positions available is one. 



The Hasselblad Foundation is an independent institution, based in Gothenburg, with a research library, a photography collection and an exhibition space. The foundation initiates and produces various forms of research projects in the history, theory and aesthetics of photography and collaborates with a range of scholars and institutions. The Hasselblad Foundation's own research is often based on the photographic collection and archive as well as on the yearly recipients of the Hasselblad Award. The current research in the field of photography at Valand Academy has a strong curatorial approach with a focus on the mediation of photography through exhibitions and publications, as well as an ambitious research program in the field of environmental studies. Research at Valand Academy has a dynamic milieu including film, fine art, literary composition, poetry and prose, and photography, and is primarily practice-based and practice-led. The Academy has around 90 employees and about 300 students studying on programs at the bachelor, master and doctoral level.

Applications to the position could address questions of the role of the photographic medium - both historically and currently - as social documentary, participatory photography, in citizen journalism, surveillance and 'sous-veillance', political activism and artistic expressions, as well as in abuses of power and challenges to basic human rights.

The position requires an active artistic practice within one or more of the following areas: sculpture, installation, new media, performance, public art, social practice, post-studio praxis and other relevant areas.



The position includes teaching and student supervision at the bachelor's and master's level but can also include program development, research, and academic assignments. Examples of academic assignments are course coordination, program coordination, representation in the research and/or education boards, and managerial tasks. These assignments are limited and are determined by the line manager. The job assignments of this position also includes course administration, participation in the development of the department, as well as collaboration, both internal and external with the wider society. The teacher is expected to be active within artistic development, artistic research and in-house artistic activities. The teacher is also expected to follow developments in the subject area and the society in general, whenever it is relevant to the subject. 


The teaching requires a broad experience of different forms of education that comprises of lectures, seminars, individual supervision and workshops. Coordination at the program level occurs through regular group meetings to work on the content, quality and development of the program.
