The Master's Degree Programme in Film offers time, space and a context in which talented professionals can develop themselves and their projects through a process of research, experimentation and exchange. The setting is international and diverse – because of the variety of backgrounds and expertise of both participants and lecturers. The study programme offers the tools, the guidance and the inspiration to undertake and articulate that journey of development.

The 'Artistic Research in Film' programme is unique in its kind, both in the Netherlands and abroad. Our participants and tutors come from all over the world and from a variety of artistic and professional backgrounds. We invite no more than ten participants a year, so it's highly selective. The programme is custom made so you will design your own research trajectory and have your own mentor. Your research can be conceptual, technical or both. You will have a lot of freedom to experiment and a budget to do so. In all, it is an intense and challenging experience… professionally, artistically and intellectually.

The programme consists of five elements:
- seminars and workshops relating to the different aspects involved in artistic research (using the researchers' own research questions as a starting point);
- one-on-one sessions with the mentor;
- feedback and exchange between participants;
- additional lectures by (inter)national filmmakers, artists and theoreticians;
- and last but not least: individual work on both research and projects.

Programme duration
The programme takes two years full time (120 EC), although participants or researchers may spend three years in completing their studies by taking a time-out of a year (or twice six months).

Application and admission

The 2-year international MA program at the Netherlands Film Academy in Amsterdam gives you the time, space and support to develop your creative voice by undertaking artistic research.

Who can apply?
The MA programme is a certified course, taught in English, open to all professionals with a bachelor degree in (all sub-disciplines of) film, visual arts, digital media or performing arts, with at least three or four years of experience in their field and with an interesting research topic and a related project idea.
