IHEAP NEW YORK
Call for applications 2015
Session XI

The Institut des hautes études en arts plastiques (Iheap) is a French post-graduate institute for research and experimentation in art that serves as the educational branch of the Biennale de Paris. Iheap offers its participants a unique course of study that is not bound to the history of 20th century art but actively encourages the investigation of crucial issues of art in the 21st century, an ongoing history in which our students, known as sessionists, will inevitably help write.

Iheap is open to all creative practitioners who have an expectation to engage not only within the art world, but also with the world at large. Artists encouraged to apply are those who consistently question the limits of their singular artistic practice or professional activity, especially those who desire to break free from the often-alienating pedagogy of the art school environment.

Iheap is seeking applicants who reject art as it is often routinely practiced in fixed academic programs and whom acknowledge that experimental conditions are essential for the creation of art that is both challenging and intimate. Iheap moves and composes itself within a multitude of environments. It is a fluid school with no fixed structure, either pedagogically or geographically; each class takes place at a different location.

Course of study

Each session is completed over two years, two days a week. The first year sessionists engage in artistic practice, informed by a broad scope of theoretical orientations. The second year is given over to the development of an activity report and the presentation of a special project, with the purpose of demonstrating the maturation of each participant's research.

The hope is that Iheap New York will, in its own way, reinforce contemporary French-American relations, as well as the historical links between these two singular cities, which have each played a key role in shaping the history of art. The possibility for students to actively engage in exchanges, or 'residencies abroad', between New York and Paris.

The application fee is 70 Dollars. Tuition is 9000 Dollars for two years of study.

Upon completion, Iheap confers a French post-graduate diploma that is research based, usually awarded after a masters or in conjunction with a doctoral degree. Participants may be enrolled in a parallel course of study while attending Iheap. Eligible candidates are not, however, required to hold a prior degree.
