Art and Architecture #1

Nuno Sousa Vieira
«Ouvi dizer que o lugar mais
escuro é sempre debaixo da luz»

Vernissage:
Friday 25 Julho 2014, 7pm

Exhibition through 23 August 2014

The artist Nuno Sousa Vieira (1971 * Leiria, Portugal) is interested in rethinking the architectural structures of exhibition spaces and establishing a relationship between them and his creation space, the studio. In the last years, he has been presenting a series of shows for which he recovers and transforms objects found in his studio, which was a former plastics factory near Lisbon. What is important for him is the inherent memory of these materials, which once were used in a labour context, and that when transported and re-contextualized in the exhibition space, eventually turn it into the artist's studio itself.

Launching the project Art and Architecture with the exhibition «Ouvi dizer que o lugar mais escuro é sempre debaixo da luz», the artist re interprets KUNSTHALLE São Paulo's exhibition space in order to address memory in two moments: one in which the exhibition space is considered, from within the studio, for the designing of its scale model; and another, in which it is transformed into the studio itself by including elements belonging to the later.

In the exhibition – whose title was taken from the song Balada das Descobertas of Portuguese musician Sérgio Godinho – always linking studio and exhibition room, the artist intervenes in the space by making use of both, light as a way to represent memory, and other architectural elements of the space, which when altered and displaced, rearrange and modify the way we experience it.

The work Estudo para uma sala de exposição (2014), consists of the model of the exhibition space designed in the studio with inaccurate data, and which is lightened when placed on a luminescent plate of the emergency exit plane from the artist's studio. In the work Espaço entre / Falso e Real (2014), the artist reversed the light projectors of the space, placing them upside down, and made a cut in the plaster on the ceiling of the exhibition space, whose form and dimensions are equal of the space model, placed just below it. Three other works, which also use the photoluminescence, Fuga # 1 (2014), a plate of the emergency exit plan of the artist's studio, and Fuga # 2 (2014) and Fuga # 3 (2014), photographs of the space model, further enhances the relationship between the spaces. Added to these, there is the work Resistência à Luz (2014), which is a book of meanings from the artist's studio, which displays a text on the resistance to light of space and materials.

On the facade, emerges another work De olhos pregados no chão (2014), which is intimately related with the last part of the exhibition As it is, da série seja bem vindo (2014). In both works the artist emphasizes the entrance, presenting it as a space in between, a boundary place, a passage from the real to the symbolic. In De olhos pregados no chão (2014), which consists of a painting on KUNSTHALLE São Paulo's facade with the same color that is painted the room of the Director in the artist's studio. In the work As it is, da série seja bem vindo (2014), the artist replicates, in another material, the stairs and the access ramp to the room itself, and by rotating and moving it in space, he reverses the circulation logics, so that at the end of show, the observer is symbolically replaced in the entrance of the exhibition space.

About Art and Architecture

The project Art and Architecture consists of a series of exhibitions of foreign artists at KUNSTHALLE São Paulo, and aims to create a dialogue between art and architecture, analyzing the difficulties offered by the exhibition space, working them in two ways: a more radical, in which art overlaps the architecture of the space, solving the problem and staying there permanently; and another, more ironic, in which art points to the problem, but undergoes architecture, leaving it unsolved after the exhibition.
