VAN EYCK 17 – 24 August 2014

Deadline applications: 23 June 2014

'We don't see our work as art; we don't see our work as making beautiful things. It is the result of social movement. It is not fashion or a special view of art. We try to establish our connection with the social situation in our work … The answers to our problems must be the questions: Why, how, when where, what?'
— Paul Schuitema in the book 'What is a designer' by Norman Potter

Roosje Klap
(1973, Amsterdam, The Netherlands) owns a studio for visual communication, mainly graphic design and typography, which she has set up after her Graphic Design studies at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. The studio researches the experimental boundaries of custom fit design, peculiar yet collaborative. With Roosje Klap a typeface can be unreadable, a book can turn out to be a sculpture and a stamp can become a drawing-by-numbers-drawing: she has a strong affection for unorthodox type design. Solving the mystery of an unanswered question is what drives Roosje Klap.
Many of her projects involve close collaboration with specialists from different cultural backgrounds, such as artists, curators, architects, type designers and writers. The research-based interdisciplinary design approach enables Roosje Klap to challenge the boundaries of graphic design and create new forms of communication.
She recently designed two stamp series for PostNL as well as the new 2 euro coin for the Netherlands. For her design of the Encyclopedia of Fictional Artists and for her Rijksakademie Annual Report 2011 she received a European Design Award.
She also works as an Advising Researcher at the post-academic institute Van Eyck in Maastricht (NL), as well as head of the Graphic Design Department (together with Niels Schrader) at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague (NL), where she implements what she calls 'affective design'.

Our Polite Society is a graphic design studio based in Amsterdam/The Netherlands and Stockholm/Sweden, formed in 2008 by Jens Schildt (SE) and Matthias Kreutzer (D). In close collaboration with their clients and with a passionate interest in typography, structure, and method, they design (typo) graphic identities, books, magazines, posters, exhibitions, record sleeves, (dingbat) fonts, websites. Jens is currently teaching at Konstfack University, Nyckelviksskolan and Grafikskolan in Stockholm, Matthias is teaching in the foundation year of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy Amsterdam.
