How does the world come into the picture?* The following four of 21 courses of 2014 Summer Academy deal with the particular ability of the fine arts to generate 'images' of the increasingly impenetrable world, both of its superficial outward appearance and of social and political conditions.

Students of OLGA CHERNYSHEVA and ANNA JERMOLAEWA's course will think about images, about how they work and what they mean. The course is designed with a new idea: The participants will maintain mutual contact and exchange with the participants of ANDERS KREUGER's curatorial course. Hereby they learn more about the curatorial point of view in theoretical thinking about image production, and to benefit from this mutual inspiration. The overall aim is to critically explore the boundaries between thinking alone (which artists often like to do) and thinking together (which curators must always do).
Duration: 21 July–2 August 2014
Fee: € 680.- (red. € 520.-)

NORBERT BISKY in his course will consider the relationship between perception and visualisation. There will be questions like what do we perceive in our surroundings, and how do we do so? How does an image take shape in our mind's eye, and what is its relation to the picture we create on canvas or paper? Step by step, the students will develop individual priorities and a free, confident approach. They are encouraged to find their own visual language.
Duration: 21 July–9 August 2014
Fee: € 920.- (red. € 680.-)

AMELIE VON WULFFEN begins her course with the question of how artists appropriate the world, and how it then develops into a picture. Including drawing and painting from nature, from models and from imagination, this soon leads to fundamental questions on painting. The students are encouraged to ask questions like: What do I paint for, and where will my pictures go? What kind of presentation, display, and space do I have in mind? Why do I draw or paint things I could also photograph? The aim of this course is to evolve a lively, well-considered, up-to-date pictorial language.
Duration: 18–30 August 2014
Fee: € 680.- (red. € 520.-)
