DATA : SALON II
MICHAEL MERSEREAU
KATE BOUCHARD

11 December 2013
7pm – 10pm

For the second Data : Salon of the 2013-14 season, artists Michael Mersereau and Kate Bouchard will present their works in progress, 'Fear Eats the Soul' and 'Les filmeurs de Sainte-Cécile' respectively.

'Fear Eats the Soul' is an electronic interpretation of Rainer Fassbinder's 1974 film, 'Ali: Fear Eats the Soul'. It takes new form in light and sound, becoming a work in its own right, a new experience for the spectator and a novel way of seeing the original. A play on perception, it offers us the literal possibility to change our point of view. Using the two fundamental elements of transmission, light and sound, a computer program converts the film's subtitles into morse. The result is a digital invocation of radio emissions and intimate conversations where fears and frustrations are laid bare. Michael Mersereau is an experimental video, electronics, and sound artist. He graduated with a MFA from Mills College (Oakland, CA) and a BFA from the California College of the Arts (San Francisco, CA). Mersereau currently lives in Montreal, Quebec.

'Les Filmeurs de Sainte-Cécile' is a video installation investigating the border between documentary and art film. Kate Bouchard proposed to 17 children in a reception class at Sainte-Cécile school in Villeray, Montreal to film their daily educational environment. Each child expresses his subjectivity through his interests, abilities and intuitions. A point of view that the viewer, then placed at the center of the classroom, can experience. Kate Bouchard produces short films in 16mm and super 8mm that combine documentary and experimental genres in order to question certain notions regarding objectivity and knowledge. She lives in Montreal, QC. And is currently completing her Masters in Experimental Media.
