Sound is ubiquitous and permanent, and embraces us as an envelope. Therefore, the experience of the auditory can be considered an environmental experience par excellence. The term and concept of soundscape reflects this idea. It implies, that sounds do not exist in isolation, and have to be understood as being embedded in and interacting with other sounds and perceptions coining the perceptional abilities of individuals and societies and their social relations: soundscape is a system in which all elements are interdependent.

With Presentations by:
Gernot Böhme (D), Carmen Braden (CDN), Ioanna Etmektsoglou (GR), Marion Glück-Levi (D), Helmi Järviluoma (FI), Derrick de Kerckhove (CDN), Bernie Krause (USA), Eric Leonardson (USA), Koji Nagahata (J), Jay Needham (USA), R. Murray Schafer (CDN), Keiko Torigoe (J), Katerina Tzedaki (GR), Hildegard Westerkamp(CDN) and another hundred experts from all over the world.

Our venue is situated not far from Frankfurt airport in beautiful historic surroundings, providing not only the productive frame for an interesting conference, but also attractive landscapes, very good wine, culinary highlights, therefore fine conditions for exchange and conviviality.

The conference is supported by the 'Understanding Canada'-programme/Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade and the Embassy of Canada Berlin, in collaboration with Darmstädter Ferienkurse/Darmstadt Summercourse, Hessische Film- und Medienakademie, the Dieburg Magistrat and endorsed by the World Forum for Acoustic Ecology.
