'Doppelgänger' is Yaşam Şaşmazer's most recent exhibition about reflections on the mirror, doubles and shadows. The show was planned specifically for Künstlerhaus Marktoberdorf. It is the attempt of the look into the mirror, which surfaces not only the frighteningly unusual and strange but also the surprisingly familiar: that is, us. Şaşmazer questions her own personality by using life-sized wooden effigies. The confrontation with the mirror image is an exercise of acknowledging the ‚self'; it brings things to light that are known but hidden so deep inside that we are not even aware of. The artist analyses social identities and society; balances choices and opportunities. Selected quotations from novels of world literature, which deal with the doppelgänger motif, entitle the exhibited sculptures. The sound installation featuring the literary quotations is spoken by Jale Arikan (with special thanks to Loft Tonstudios Berlin GmbH).
