25 YEARS OF EMAF

We have reason to celebrate: the European Media Art Festival will be held this year for the 25th time, and has therefore now been presenting the current trends of the international media scene in Osnabrück each spring for a quarter of a century.

// CINEMA
Experimental shorts and feature films, music videos, new forms of narration and documentation as well as specials.

The film selection of the EMAF 2012 will present more than 170 new films and videos. They take the visitor on a visual journey around the globe, leading from familiar, exotic places and past events to personal, touching posts in the artist's life. The common theme, that unites the films of this years selection is 'Record'. This embraces the spectrum of pure observation and documentation, focusing, however, on selecting, interpreting and commenting.

// EXHIBITION
The latest installations from18 April to 28 May 2012 in the Kunsthalle Dominikanerkirche. Among them Gustav Hellberg, Marnix de Nijs, Nika Oblak & Primoz Novak, Melanie Manchot, Anke Eckardt, Karl Heinz Jeron, Ulrike Gabriel, Maria Vedder, Macular, Democracia, Egill Saebjörnsson, Julia Willms, Tina Tonagel, Niklas Roy.

// NOW AND THEN
Filmmakers who have accompanied the festival from the very beginning will screen their new works and place them in a retrospective context. Programmes by: Corinna Schnitt, Shelly Silver, Mike Hoolboom and Andrew Kötting.

// CONGRESS
The Congress offers a critical and exciting exploration of current Media Art and Culture. In their talks, renowned speakers will explore the history, present and future of Media Art from a cultural, philosophical and social perspective. In a special key subject, EMAF will also dwell on the artistic developments associated with the radical political changes in the Arab region. Keynote speakers are Peter Weibel and Gerhard Johann Lischka.

// MEDIA CAMPUS

The contact and project exchange for new projects, tendencies and training concepts from the media universities, academies of art and design colleges of Europe.

// PERFORMANCES AND MUSIC

The performances combine the charm of analogue elements with the excitement of the digital. The artists mix live, using turntables, overhead- and 16 mm film projectors and digital animations. Performances by Max Hattler and Vesper On, Institut für Feinmotorik, Emmanuel Lefrant & Stefano Canapa, James Pants and Felix Kubin.

// AWARDS

At the festival an international jury will present the ›EMAF Award‹ for a trend-setting work in Media Art, the ›EMAF Newcomer Award‹ and the ›Dialogpreis‹ of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the promotion of intercultural exchange. Furthermore, the jury of the German Federal Association of Film Journalists will award the prize for the best German experimental film.

// ABOUT EMAF

Productions by internationally renowned media artists and the innovative works of new masters from the academies will be presented at the 25th European Media Art Festival. The EMAF is one of the most influential forums of international Media Art. As a meeting point for artists, curators, distributors, gallery owners and an audience of specialists, the festival has a great impact on the topic and aesthetics of Media Art. Each year the festival offers its visitors a current overview of new experimental films, performances, lectures, an exhibition and the Media Campus.
