Following the previous two years of the Crazycurators Biennale in 2006 and 2008, which were met with huge success among the local as well as international professional and lay public, SPACE Gallery is organizing its 3rd edition in 2010. Based on the experiences from the last years we have decided to extend the biennial and place it into more spaces around Bratislava. In 2008 the biennial „expanded' from the gallery space into the streets, closer to the viewer when the projects of the four participating countries were presented in the alternative exhibition spaces – iexhibition pavilions. This step was perceived very positively and increased public awareness of the project. In 2010 the Crazycurators Biennale will be located not only in the exhibition space of SPACE Gallery but also in Dom umenia/House of Arts on Nám. SNP 12 and HIT Gallery on Hviezdoslavovo nám. 18 in Bratislava.
Crazycurators Biennale /the first year took place in 2006 on the premises of SPACE Gallery at Lazaretská/ is one of the smallest biennials in the world. It is a form of constructive critique of megalomaniac biennials that have been constantly arising all around the world. Thus the conception is based on a narrow selection of renowned curators actively working in the framework of gallery practice. For the biennial each of them chooses only one artist. Paradoxically they lose a chance to be curators in the right meaning of the word and curate their own exhibition in the framework of the biennial. Likewise the biennial has no ambition to adjust a selection of an artist to a given theme, extremely abstract, that is usually a part of similar events. Intentional 'insubstantiality' of Crazycurators Biennale is on the other hand balanced by a misleading name of the event as well as minimal spatial and budget possibilities. Nevertheless the Crazycurators Biennale is a highly professional platform for a confrontation of the latest strategies and forms in contemporary art. Simultaneously it provides a space for a critical reflection of contemporary art that is, especially on our scene, often absent. Already at its inception the main purpose of the project was to create in Slovakia a periodically repeating international presentation of contemporary art in order to address not only the professional but also the wider lay public and also to present a 'display of international contemporary art' and thus familiarize the Slovak public with the latest 'trends' in contemporary art as well as present Slovak art as a fully-fledged partner on the international art scene. The biennial focuses on the young innovative, highly actual, experimental and progressive forms of art and unconventional curatorial strategies.
The third edition of the Crazycurators Bienale will feature the artists from the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Austria, Slovakia, Germany, Slovenia, Serbia, the USA/Nigeria, the Netherlands, Lithuania.
