apexart is pleased to announce the two winners of Franchise 2011. Over 3,400 votes were cast by nearly 100 jurors to determine the winning projects, which will be presented in 2011.

First place proposal: Taking place in Amman, Jordan- Eric Gottesman and Toleen Touq's exhibition 'Reorientation' examines national borders by utilizing the now-defunct railway designed to transport pilgrims to Mecca.

Second place proposal: Taking place in Stockholm, Sweden, the exhibition 'Washed Out,' organized by Corina Oprea, Valerio Del Baglivo, Misbah Deeb, Isabel Lofgren, Judith Souriau, Carolina Rito, and Milena Placentile, compares the public/private nature of traditional Swedish laundromats to governmental behavior.

About the Franchise: As the art world adopts strategies from the world of business, cultural organizations such as Guggenheim and the Louvre have set up franchise operations. For the third year, apexart is joining this trend and setting up its own franchise in two new cities. For a four-week exhibition, the winner will be the director, curator and/or staff of his or her own apexart franchise with an $8,000 exhibition budget, a modest salary, and almost complete control. apexart provides the funding, along with the necessary guidance to make the curated exhibition happen. This includes an apexart brochure in an edition of 10,000 and its distribution around the world to more than 108 countries.

The Franchise is an opportunity to help bring a new idea to fruition in a new place and to illustrate that the center of the world is wherever you are.
