Rebus: A Journal of Art History and Theory has now published its third issue. This issue collects together papers from an interdisciplinary postgraduate conference, titled Religion: New Perspectives, that was hosted by the Department of Art History and Theory in June 2008. These papers explore religion through Man Ray's photography, the writings of Gustav Hartlaub, post-First World War German woodcuts, Georges Bataille, Carl Jung's psychoanalysis, and demonic possession in Elizabethan England. Also to be found in this issue are reviews of exhibitions held in London, New York, and Utrecht. Full contents of this issue are below.

Rebus: A Journal of Art History and Theory
is a free online journal edited by Jenna Actaboski, Iris Balija, Dr Matthew Bowman, Lucy Bradnock, and Dr Stephen Moonie in conjunction with the Department of Art History and Theory at the University of Essex. The journal publishes bi-annually peer-reviewed essays, exhibition and book reviews. Current and past issues (issue 1 analysed allegory; issue 2 was open themed) can be accessed at:

For further updates and discussion, you can join the Rebus: A Journal of Art History and Theory facebook group. This can be accessed at:

The editors of Rebus: A Journal of Art History and Theory can be emailed at rebus@essex.ac.uk.

With issue 3 now published, it is already time to begin considering issue 4. The fourth issue will be open-themed and led by Dr Matthew Bowman and Dr Stephen Moonie. As this is an open issue, we are willing to consider papers on any aspect of art history, art theory, and art criticism for publication in issue 4. Papers should be no more than 7,000 words long, written in a high standard of UK English, and should contain no more than 10 images. Please note that all copyright permissions for images must be secured by the author, and that all image reproduction costs are borne by the author. Papers for Rebus: A Journal of Art History and Theory should be sent to rebus@essex.ac.uk by 7th August 2009. Publication is subject to peer review. We are also willing to consider exhibition reviews between 1,000 and 3,500 words in length, which should be sent to the same address.
