At the location where Wies Smals initiated de Appel in 1974, thirty artists are reflecting within the context of the auction 'Two in One' upon the relationship between the economic and the symbolic value of art. The three curators, members of de Appel's staff, have invited the artists to make a new work on A4, in which the changed value system within the art world in these times of financial crisis, is being brought up for discussion. After being exhibited, the conceptual works, texts, drawings, promises, understatements, ideas, visions and performances will be part of the 'Two in One' auction taking place at Christie's on 20 May. The project is an empathetic critique from within, in which de Appel and the artists assume the simultaneous role of contemporary collaborator and critical inquirer.

2 May (Opening), 6 pm: 'Tu Aimes, Tu Achètes - You Like, You Buy', performance of Meschac Gaba realized by Jonathan and Johannes Gaba

Witte de With, Auction House Christie's and de Appel are launching together 'Two in One': an auction of more then 100 works by leading national and international contemporary artists, The proceeds from the auction will be used for realising de Appel's future accommodation and for revamping Witte de With's programme.

The collaboration between de Appel, Witte de With and Christie's is unique within the Netherlands. In addition to the need to survive in a changing socio-economic landscape, it is just as much a call to shake hands at the institutional level on a regular basis. A large number of the artists taking part in 'Two in One' are making their auction debut and will moreover be sharing in the proceeds (15%). The participating artists have exhibited at de Appel or Witte de With in the past, which often turned out to be the starting point for successful international careers, Their participation thus gives concrete form to their enthusiasm for, support of and commitment to de Appel and Witte de With.
